The Subtle Truth. 003 - VLCN

Dj and music producer: VLCN
VLCN

Beginning his career as a music producer back in 2017, VLCN (pronounced Vulcan), is a name that we will being hearing more and more of in the dubstep scene. Based out of Tampa, Florida, this artist dabbles with different genres but has been mainly focusing on dubstep and hybrid trap. His career was kick-started by his bootleg remix of ‘Griztronics’ by Griz and Subtronics which received a lot of attention on SoundCloud. VLCN now has some amazing label releases under his belt on labels including Wubaholics, MMXVAC, WTF’s That Sound, Subsidia and more.

We can’t wait to see his career blossom in the coming years and we're super happy to get to know this talented artist a little better.

Here we go.

Q. What made you decide to focus on dubstep and hybrid trap over other genres?

A: When I first got into producing in 2017, my favorite artists at that time were Excision, Zomboy, Boombox Cartel & Liquid Stranger. Those artists made me fall in love with hearing Dubstep and Hybrid/Experimental music live. I wanted to be able to give people that same feeling I felt at those shows. I love all genres pretty much but those are definitely the ones that stick out to me that I want to make and play for people.

Q. How did you come up with the name VLCN?

A: Growing up I really loved Star Trek. I used to watch it all the time on TV. Obviously, Spock being my favorite character, his race was Vulcan. I also played a game called Smite for like 6 years now and one of the characters in the game is named Vulcan who is the Roman God of Fire, Forge, Metalworking and even Volcanoes. I just don't like the way it looks spelled all the way out so I shortened it to VLCN. So yeah I am a nerd that's where it came from haha.

Q. What is a dream collab of yours?

A: I have a few dream collabs. Two biggest would be Excision or Liquid Stranger. Also really would love to make a tune with ATLiens, Matt Doe or G-Rex

Q. How does it feel to be one of the artists who’s released on Excision’s label ‘Subsidia’?

A: With Excision being my favorite dubstep artist for what is going on close to 10 years now, it is one of those dream come true scenarios. It was definitely a moment that solidified my path towards dubstep and I can't thank him or the Subsidia team enough for believing in my project and giving me the opportunity to release that song with them. The song itself from the cinematics to the vocals are heavily influenced by X himself.

Q. Do you consider yourself to be more of an introvert or an extrovert? Feel free to explain.

A: This is a strange one because I feel like both sometimes. But the majority of the time I am definitely an Extrovert. I find it super easy when out to just walk up to people and start conversations etc. I have been referred to as a social butterfly one too many times.

Q. What was your dream job as a kid?

A: All growing up I played football, basketball, baseball, hockey year round until I was 16 then I focused more on baseball and football. I always thought I would be playing Major League Baseball at some point in my life. I got offers out of high school for some small colleges because I made 2nd Team all state in 2009. I tore my labrum on two separate occasions and now here I am.

Q. Lastly, do you have any upcoming projects you’d like to tell us about?

A: The biggest project I am working on right now is a collab with Space Wizard. It will be a nice change from being so focused on dubstep and have the fans that loved my style with my Griztronics remix and other experimental/hybrid songs to get to hear that side of the VLCN project again. That’s what is so hard about enjoying so many types of music is trying to stay brand focused on one to two genres when your brain wants you to make everything under the sun.

We cannot wait to hear this new collab and all the new songs VLCN is working on.
