WHZLY

A young superstar on the rise, WHZLY is a music producer from Los Angeles who is quickly gaining much deserved recognition for his work. WHZLY turned his love for music into a successful artist career with the help of his amazing management team Shayan Behboodi and Gregory Crenshaw. He was the first artist to release an EP on the up and coming record label Obskure and currently has releases on major labels including DIM MAK, Buygore and Ganja White Night’s Subcarbon Records. With his wonky style of dubstep and his undeniable passion for creating music, we can’t wait to see where this journey takes him.

We are super stoked to have WHZLY as our first guest on SBT’s ‘The Subtle Truth’.

Our goal is to help people discover talent within the music industry and to give our guests a platform to promote themselves and share some fun facts. From music producers, singers, label owners, managers, and more, we are excited to put talented individuals in the spotlight and allow our audience to get to know them a little better.

So without further ado, let’s get to know WHZLY !

Q. How did you come up with your artist name? Is there a specific meaning behind it? A. The meaning behind the name WHZLY (pronounced /wheezly) is actually a funny one and quite explicit so fair warning. It was the summer of 2014, I was about 22 years old and was working at Subway as a sandwich artist. When my shift was over I was headed back to my friend's house otherwise known as the "REFUGEE CAMP", because there were about 7-8 people living there and the house was only a 3 bedroom. In addition, it was summer, and having red hair meant that my hair was bright orange at the time. As I walked into the house, it had come to my attention that everyone in the main room was tripping absolute balls on something...my guess was some type of mushroom.....As it had come to their attention that I had just walked into the room, my friend yells out, "LOOK ITS RONALD! RONALD WEASLEY!" Everyone began yelling, "MR. WEASLEY! RON HAS RETURNED HOGWARTZ! WE'VE GOT A WEASLEY IN THE BUILDING! WELCOME TO DIAGON ALLEY!" In no way shape or form do I advocate this behavior but I was dying of laughter. After that, my friends would greet me as Ronald or Weasley whenever walking in or passing by in public/school. When it came to deciding a name for my artist project, I asked a friend and he said "Bruh, Weasley...no, no..Wheezly" I laughed and said, love it. Eventually I changed the name Wheezly to WHZLY because I thought it just looked cleaner to me and vowels are overrated anyway.

Q. Are you currently working on music full time or do you have another source of income? A. I aim to be working on music full time this year or the next, but as of right now I actually work part time at my family's business working with my Dad in sales. I also run a small business with a friend of mine mentoring/teaching others in production who are just starting out or who are looking for guidance and an extra set of hands to help them further their production goals. We also make a lot of cool new friends that way too.

Q. Which 5 artists have you been listening to the most lately? A. Off the top of my head, I would say CHEE, GANJA WHITE NIGHT, SUBTRONICS, RUVLO, and XOTIX.

Q. Awesome, now let’s get to know you on a more personal level… What’s your favorite movie and why is it your favorite? A. Easy, National Treasure with Nicholas Cage lol. Why is it my favorite…two words, Nicholas Cage. I think I know every line from that movie since I have seen it so many times. I think it’s my favorite because I've just seen it so many times, it's basically a meme now, and watching Nick Cage being Nick Cage is the best. I have so many inside jokes or random phrases between some of my best friends where out of nowhere we’ll just start quoting the movie in the middle of a conversation in public just cause.

Q. If you could only eat 1 meal for the rest of your life, what would it be? A. Tikka Masala, that shit slaps.

Q. Can you tell us 1 fun fact about yourself that not many people know? A. Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I am proud to say that I'm a pretty mean chef. I come from a giant Italian family and my family members have told me that I have "the sauce". My two passions are production and cooking. They are so similar if you really think about it; I get to experiment and create new experiences that I get to share and enjoy with people and that's what makes me happy.

Q. I love that. Last question, do you have any upcoming projects you’d like to tell us about or any recent releases that you’d like to promote/share? A. I am currently working on a couple songs at the moment and a wonky ep that I am eager to finish and share. As of right now, I just released a single on SUBCARBON RECORDS called "KNOCK OUT" that you can stream on SoundCloud and cop a free download. It's my first track release of 2021 and I am so hyped that it's out. I have been overwhelmed yet humbled with the messages from people and those who are sharing, downloading and playing it in their sets. I really love this community... the journey of creating an idea, finishing it, planning for it, releasing it, watching people react to it and then engaging with those who message me or comment, it’s truly inspiring and so motivating. It just gets me excited to wake up the next day and create a new idea.
